- Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, is assassinated on October 31 and is succeeded by her eldest son Rajiv Gandhi.[1]
- Khan Noonien Singh barely escapes the bloody riots in Delhi after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. he is saved by Gary Seven, who, after having saved him 10 years earlier from the Chrysalis Project, has watched him, hoping that he could join his covert operations one day.[1]
- Later that year, Seven and Khan travel to the South Pole on a hint from Guinan, tracking down Dr. Wilson Evergreen who has found a method to fix the ocone hole. At Seven's request, Evergreen leaves the hole as it is; it is revealed that Evergreen is immortal. During the mission, Seven realises that Khan is too violent to form part of his team[1]
- When returning to India, Seven and Khan witness how thousands run away from the poison gas following the chemical leak in Bhopal. Khan decides that such accidents should not happen, and begins to form his vision for the future (and also adapts the name "Khan")[1]
