2001: A Space Odyssey was a science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke, and a film directed by Stanley Kubrick, both released in 1968. It takes place primarily on an exploratory spaceship run by an artificial intelligence on a secretive mission to Jupiter.
On 19 July 1969, Roberta Lincoln invited Gary Seven to a screening of the film in a nearby theater in New York City. Following a visit to the USS Enterprise in 2269, however, Lincoln decided that the film would not be able to live up to her real-life experience. They instead went to see Funny Girl. (TOS novel: Assignment: Eternity)
When Khan Noonien Singh hacked into the Beta 5 computer on 9 November 1989, it affected the machine's speech interface in a way that Lincoln compared to a scene from 2001, in which the HAL 9000 computer sang the song "Daisy" while being deactivated.
