April 4, 2163 Federation President Thomas Vanderbilt, Presider Maxot of the Global League of Lyaksti'kton, and the Basileus of M'tezir meet on Vega IX to finalize trade agreements between the Federation and Sauria.
April 2-7, 2163 the USS Pioneer under the command of Captain Malcolm Reed, is almost destroyed after becoming trapped in a decaying orbit of a super-jovian planet but manages to communicate and ask for help from the "Cloud Whales" who inhabited the planet's atmosphere.
Reynaldo Sangupta and a group of engineers under Tobin Dax are able to reconcile Human Warp drive technology with Andorian Deflector shield technology while working aboard the USS Pioneer.

April 7, 2163: Dr. Tobin Dax is appointed Chief engineer of the USS Pioneer after Commander Alan Sheehan was severely injured.
