• Captain Garth of Izar is victorious over the Klingon Empire at the Battle of Axanar. Captain Rollin Bannock and the crew of the USS Republic lead the successful Axanar Peace Mission to smooth over relations with the Axanarri. ^[1]
• Gary Mitchell enters Starfleet Academy ^[1]

• The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) returns from her first five year mission. Captain Robert April announces Christopher Pike as his successor for captaincy of the Enterprise. ^[2]
• Pavel Chekov gets his first telescope, triggering his interest in space and alien life-forms. ^[3]
• The USS Republic, en route to Alpha Varangis for a cadet training mission, is diverted to Heir'tzan. ^[1]
• Cygnet XIV, Heir'ocha, and Heir'tzan are admitted into the Federation. ^{[4] [1]}

[edit] Promotions and Transfers

• Cadet James T. Kirk is awarded the Palm Leaf of Axanar and is granted an honorary lieutenant grade in recognition of his role in the Axanar Peace Mission. ^[1]
• Spock graduates from Starfleet Academy with the rank of Ensign. He is posted as assistant science officer on a space cutter. ^[5]
• Robert April is promoted to Commodore. ^[6]
• Christopher Pike transfers from command of the USS Yorktown (NCC-1704) to command of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). ^[5]
• Captain Pike puts together his crew for the USS Enterprise; chief engineer Moves-With-Burning-Grace, Doctor Phillip Boyce and Lieutenant José Tyler remain from April's crew. Pike personally recruits Number One. The rest of Pike's senior crew include Nurse Gabrielle Carlotti, Lieutenant Sita Mohindas, Nano and transporter chief Nils Pitcairn. ^[7]

Given "Shakedown" portrayed the shakedown cruise of the Enterprise, and this issue, eight years later, shows April still in command, it must be set near to the end of April's captaincy, which concluded in 2251.
