"225 Years of Service" is the 16th of 18 short stories in New Worlds, New Civilizations, an in-universe anthology released by Pocket Books in November 1999. It was written by Michael Jan Friedman and illustrated by Doug Drexler and Alan Kobayashi. The story, the third of five in Part 4: Earth, explores Starbase 11 in 2376.

Description[]

Starbase 11, the only survivor of the original Earth starbases, still a working facility, now celebrates an anniversary.

Summary[]

2376 is the 225th anniversary of Starbase 11. A lieutenant commander from the Starfleet office of information, formerly stationed at the starbase as an ensign in the 2350s, is chosen to chronicle the celebration. While there, he reunites with his former CO, Admiral Michael Carlin, and meets Admiral Leonard McCoy. When the journalist asks how to describe the facility for readers, McCoy suggests he tell the story of Harvey Hildebrandt, a weapons officer injured during an attack by Klingon rebels in 2298.
