A.G. Robinson was a Human who lived during the 22nd century. He was a Commander, and later a Captain in the Earth Starfleet, and was a friend of fellow officer Jonathan Archer.
In 2143 he was involved in Starfleet efforts to break the warp 2 barrier. Robinson became the first to do so, getting the NX-Alpha test craft to fly at warp 2.2 before it was destroyed. When Starfleet suspended further testing at the insistence of the Vulcan government, Robinson and Archer took out the NX-Beta on an unauthorized flight. With corrections made by Charles Tucker III, the two men were able to get the craft to safely fly at warp 2.5. Even though the two men were grounded by Starfleet for this infraction, the ship's ability to fly safely at this speed convinced Starfleet that the engine was sound and that they should continue their efforts.
Eventually Robinson was promoted to the rank of captain. Robinson was considered as a candidate to command the Enterprise (NX-01), however Archer was ultimately chosen six months before the launch of Enterprise. As the second warp five ship, Columbia (NX-02) neared completion, Robinson was expected to be named that ship's commander. However in March of 2153 Robinson died in an accident while climbing Earth's Mount McKinley. The Robinson Nebula would be named in his memory. (ENT episode: "First Flight")
