Aaron Satie was a noted jurist in the United Federation of Planets who was a passionate advocate of civil liberties. Satie had several children, including Starfleet Admiral Norah Satie.

Sometime prior to 2367, Satie died. However his memory and legacy lived on, not only with his own daughter, but with many others in the Federation as well, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

When Norah Satie subjected Captain Picard to a drumhead trial, Picard related that he was disturbed about her actions, and offered the quote from her father, "With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied – chains us all, irrevocably." Hearing her father's words, Norah Satie launched into a vicious tirade against Picard, which was ended only when Admiral Henry became disgusted and walked out of the hearing room.
