Achernar (also known as Alpha Eridani and Achenar) was a B class star in the Romulan Star Empire, visible from Sol as the brightest part of the Eridanus constellation. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation) In 2379, the system was captured by forces led by Commander Donatra, who proclaimed the system capital of a new Imperial Romulan State, of which she declared herself Empress. Donatra's government resided on the planet Achernar Prime.
The system's primary spins so rapidly that its equatorial diameter is more than 50% greater than its polar diameter. In the early 21st Century, it was the least-spherical star known to Human astronomy. (Real-word information)
The Achernar system could be visually seen from Space Station KR-3. In 2311, Elias Vaughn stood in front of a viewport on the space station and tested his memory, naming all the major stars he could see in Romulan space. (TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)
