The Acropolis was an old human term to describe a high city that is placed on high ground, such as hills or mountains. The most famous city, was The Acropolis which was built in Athens, Greece thousands of years ago. The Federation starship USS Acropolis was named for this place.

By the 23rd century the Acropolis still existed as a very ancient ruin. It was a tourist hotspot for centuries, and one of the billions of visitors was Captain James T. Kirk. When visiting the planet Mercan in 2269, he commented that the main council building in the city of Celebritan reminded him of it. (TOS novel: The Abode of Life)
