Akira class

The Akira-class was a type of Federation heavy cruiser used by Starfleet in the late 24th century. Built in response to the Borg threat and rising hostilities with the Dominion, Akira class vessels are fast manoeuvrable attack ships. (ST roleplay module: Starfleet Operations Manual)

The Akira class was initially conceived during rising hostilities with the Cardassian Union, the project at first was just a test in starship design, however following Starfleet’s disastrous losses to the Borg in the Battle of Wolf 359 Starfleet began a major program of starship development and building to meet any future Borg threat.

The USS Akira was launched in 2368 and the Akira class went on become a major player in the fleet. The class performed admirably against the Borg on their return and was involved in numerous battles in the Dominion War. (ST reference: Starship Spotter)

The Akira class is heavily armed with an amazing fifteen photon torpedo launchers. However its defining feature is its shuttle bay which exists through the length of the ship allowing the Akira class to act as a fighter carrier. Its complement of forty fighters exit through the forward shuttle doors and return through one of two aft bays. (ST reference: Starship Spotter)

Note: The Akira-class heavy cruisers were equipped with Type 10 Phasers, Mk 80 torpedo launchers, and LF-35 linear warp engines. These starships are designed to operate for 18 years without a major overhaul and refit. (ST roleplay module: Starships)
