Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (November 18, 1923 - July 21, 1998) was an American astronaut in the 20th century, noted for being the first American to travel into space. He was also commander of the Apollo 14 mission to Luna, which landed at Fra Mauro.
The Starfleet starship USS Shepard was named in his honor. (TOS novelization: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
A picture of Shepard was displayed in the research offices at Griffin Observatory, though DTI agent Gariff Lucsly mistook the photo background for the Ocean of Storms. This mistake cost him a bet with his partner, Dulmer. (VOY - Strange New Worlds II short story: "Almost... But Not Quite")
