The Alphans were a species of single-celled organisms which were native to planet Onyius II.

While the Alphans reproduction rate were considered to be rather high, their metabolism was very poor and their resulting life-spans were shortened. The Alphans were also engaged in a length war with another species of single-celled organisms known as the Omegans.

In 2269, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise made first contact with representatives of both the Alphans and the Omegans, in the forms of Vizznr and Azrah. While both representatives tried to enlist Kirk's help in defeating their enemies, Kirk instead convinced the two species to overcome their differences, and join together in a single species, which became known as the Gammans.
