The Great Seal of the United Federation of Planets.

The Anthem of the United Federation of Planets is a musical composition that serves as the Federation's official song. The Anthem is often played at official governmental functions, such as state dinners.

History and specifics[]

In 2270, Montgomery Scott rigged an unsealed Slaver stasis box to display holographic fireworks and play the anthem when opened. Klingon Captain Kumara was infuriated by the display, an epilogue to his failed attempt to annex the United Systems of Briamos for the Klingon Empire. (TAS - Log 10 novelization: The Slaver Weapon)

The Anthem was also often played before baseball games on the Federation Member State of Cestus III, in accordance with the centuries-old tradition of playing the United States of America's national anthem before such games, such as at a game between the Deep Space 9 Niners and USS T'Kumbra Logicians in 2375. Presidential Chief of Staff Esperanza Piñiero once commented that she was so often subjected to the Anthem at baseball games attended with then-Cestus Governor Nanietta Bacco that she had grown to dislike the composition. (DS9 episode: "Take Me Out to the Holosuite", ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

The Anthem was played in the Roth Dining Room of the Palais de la Concorde in 2380 as part of the state dinner welcoming the Trinni/ek delegation to Earth. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

In 2385, the Anthem was played at the dedication ceremony for the new Deep Space 9. (ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust)

The Federation Anthem, also called The Federation Interstellar Anthem, was first mentioned in The Slaver Weapon and The Abode of Life. The anthem apparently lacks any lyrics, possibly because of the varying languages of its founding members. The Federation Anthem was composed by David Bell, who composed the music for "Take Me Out to the Holosuite."
