Antonio López de Santa Anna (February 21, 1794 – June 21, 1876) was a human from Earth who lived during the 18th and 19th centuries. Santa Anna was a key figure in Mexican history, first fighting for Mexican independence from Spain, then later serving as a General and President of Mexico.
When Texas declared itself independent of Mexico in 1836, Santa Anna led a force north to put down the rebellion. From February 23 to March 6, 1836 several thousand troops under the command of Santa Anna conducted a siege of the Alamo. Santa Anna's troops finally captured the fortification, killing figures such as Davy Crockett and William B. Travis. However this later proved disastrous for the Mexicans, as the memory of the Alamo became a rallying cry to the people of Texas, who were able to later successfully fight off Mexican control of Texas.
In the 2370s, Doctor Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien became fascinated with the Battle of the Alamo and the historical figures involved with the battle. The pair constructed a holographic recreation of the battle. The two once invited Odo to play the role of Santa Anna. (DS9 episode: "Afterimage") When Bashir became frustrated with continually losing the battle, O'Brien suggested that he play the role of Santa Anna since the General always won the battle. (DS9 episode: "The Changing Face of Evil")
Bashir and O'Brien debated Santa Anna's actions during the battle, with O'Brien holding the position that Santa Anna most likely executed Crockett in the aftermath of the battle. (DS9 episode: "Once More Unto the Breach")
