The monastery at Ashalla is key sight in the Bajoran religion and a site of historic significance.

In the Cardassian occupation a secret chamber under the monastery was the home of the Orb of Prophecy and Change, the only Orb the Bajorans prevented the Cardassians from taking.

By 2376 all the orbs had been recovered and were being stored in the same chamber. The chamber was also the chosen spawning ground of a parasite spawnmother until an Orb experience initiated by Kira Nerys resulted in the spawnmother being thrown out of normal space time. The monastery was also the location where the parasites kept several hostages including Kasidy Yates who gave birth to her daughter Rebecca Jae Sisko there. (DS9 novel: Unity)

In late September of 2376 a site just outside of Ashalla was chosen for the signing ceremony for Bajors admittance into the Federation.
