Caesar Augustus (September 23, 63 BCE – August 19, 14 CE), born Gaius Octavius Thurinus and prior to 27 BCE, known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus was the first emperor of the Roman Empire. He ruled from 27 BCE until his death. The young Octavius was adopted by his great uncle, Julius Caesar and came into his inheritance after Caesar's assassination in 44 BCE.
