The Babcock-class was a Federation class XI frigate starship in Starfleet service in the 23rd century, becoming active on reference stardate 2/1709.

The Babcock was created in the late 23rd century as a mark II spaceframe design that crewed 360 officers and crew, with room for up to 10 passengers and 250 combat troops. With the mark V refit of stardate 2/2002, the Babcock vessels had their crew capacity increased to 368. Additionally, the Babcock could carry 30,000 metric tons of cargo, rated at 600 SCU (standard cargo units). The mark II vessels weighed 170,900 metric tons, measured 355 meters in length, 150 meters in width and 60 meters in height. The mark V Babcock increased the vessel weight to 173,750 tons. The Babcock had eight standard (6 person) personnel transporters, eight 20-person combat transporter stages and 3 cargo transporters. The control computer of the Babcock vessels was of the M-4 type.

The Babcock used warp engines of the FWF-1 type, rated to cruise at warp factor 6 and max out at warp factor 8. The Babcock impulse engines were of the FIC-3 type. The Babcock weapons included 3 dual-emitter phaser banks, a total of six phaser emitters, with forward, port and starboard firing arcs. The mark II vessels had FH-3 phasers, while the mark V ships had FH-9 phasers. The vessels had two FP-6 photon torpedo launcher with forward and aft firing arcs and was defended by FSP model deflector shields.

By the later 23rd century, 140 Babcock vessels had been constructed, produced at Morena and Merak shipyards at a combined rate of 16 per year. By stardate 2/2306, 84 mark II ships and all 48 mark V vessels were in active service, with one mark II used by Star Fleet Training Command as a training vessel. Six of the mark II vessels were recorded destroyed, with one other listed as missing. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
