Barin Troi was the son of Lwaxana Troi and her Tavnian ex-husband, Jeyal. In 2372, his mother fled from his father in order to raise him herself, rather than having him raised exclusively by males, per Tavnian custom. (DS9 episode: "The Muse")
He was born on Betazed in 2372, and given the name "Barin", which means "little one" in the Tavnian language. (TNG novel: The Battle of Betazed; TNG eBook: The Insolence of Office)
He was raised by his mother, with the assistance early on of her manservant, Mr. Homn. (ST short story: "The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned")
He had two older half-sisters, the late Kestra Troi and Deanna Troi.
