Battle cruiser is a starship classification that is applied to a starship that is more heavily armed than a cruiser or light cruiser, but not as heavily armed as a battleship or dreadnought.

In the 23rd century, this classification was used to describe starships of both the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire. While Starfleet preferred the term heavy cruiser to be applied, other races continued to use the battle cruiser designation, however the distinction was made in that the battle cruisers of those powers had little of the scientific outfitting of the Federation's heavy cruisers.
