The Battle of Gamma Hydra was a military engagement that was fought in the Gamma Hydra sector between the forces of United Earth and the Romulan Star Empire during the Earth-Romulan War in 2157.

History

In 2157, Jonathan Archer led a flotilla consisting of eight United Earth Starfleet vessels including the Enterprise to Gamma Hydra in search of a Vissian listening post, believed to be under the threat of a Romulan attack.

The Earth forces arrived in the sector, but they were intercepted and engaged by the Romulan attack force before they could locate the outpost. The heavily outnumbered Starfleet task force was soon overwhelmed despite putting up a fiece fight and destroying several enemy vessels. Their total annihilation was only averted by the timely arrival of a fleet of ten Vissian starships. With the losses they already sustained the Romulan forces bacame outnumbered, so Commander T'Met ordered a full retreat.

The Vissian forces were unable to prevent the listening post's destruction, the Earth task force lost five starships and the ramaining vessels sustained heavy damage and casualties including Captain Duvall, commanding officer of the USS Gettysburg. To return some of Earth's good will, Enterprise was towed to Vissia Prime to a repair facility. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: To Brave the Storm)
