The Battle of Crater was a battle that took place in American Civil War on Earth between the Union and Confederate troops in Virginia.
Geordi La Forge had an ancestor who fought in the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864 with the US 28th Colored Troops out of Indiana. This ancestor carried the regimental flag and lost his arm in the battle. (TNG novel: The Forgotten War)
