Benjamin Rand was a Human, born in the mid-23rd century, who was the brother of Janice Rand. Ben and his brother Sirri traveled with their family, until an accident with their ship's warp core forced the family on a three-year journey which caused the Rands to experience time-dilation effects, due to high sublight speed. Their 2260 arrival at Saweoure found Benjamin and family to have aged a few years less than the rest of the galaxy.

The Rands experienced hardships on the planet they were forced to escape to. Shortly after the family arrived, they were forced into a life of slavery. Eventually, the children were able to flee to Faience where they lived the rest of their childhood under their sister's care. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)
