Berlin is a city on Earth, the capital city of the European nation-state of Germany. It is located in the northeastern corner of Germany.

History[]

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the city was divided into occupation zones controlled by each of the allied powers. The occupation zones of France, Britain, and the United States were combined into what became known as West Berlin, the Soviet Union's zone became known as East Berlin. In 1961 a wall was built by the East German government to separate the two zones. This structure came to be called the Berlin Wall, and was a major symbol of the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was torn down on 9 November 1989 as the Cold War ended. Roberta Lincoln watched the television as it showed the live demolition of the Berlin Wall. (DS9 episode: "Change of Heart", ST novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)

The city was one of the locations on Earth in which the Confederacy of Vulcan maintained a consulate in the years prior to the establishment of the United Federation of Planets. (ENT episode: "Terra Prime")

In the 24th century, the Gorn Hegemony maintained its embassy to the Federation in Berlin. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals)

Elim Garak visited Berlin when he was Cardassian Ambassador to the United Federation of Planets. He was pleased that Berlin has redeemed itself after being the The Nazi capital. (DS9 novel: Enigma Tales)

The Federation starships USS Berlin were named for this city.
