Until the tschak entity Enak was discovered, a besrethine network was just a design theory, and neither the Federation or the Cardassians had been able to make one work. After Enak was discovered by the crew of Deep Space 9, Miles O'Brien commented that studying the network could advance Federation computer technology by a century.
