A cable car or cable railway was a type of mass transit system where rail cars are hauled by a continuously moving cable running at constant speed. Individual cars can stop or start by releasing and gripping the cable as required.

By the 19th century, a cable car system had been build and opened in the city of San Francisco and its surrounding districts, on Earth, and continued to operate well into the 23rd century. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Enterprise)

During a walk from Starfleet Headquarters to Velluto's restaurant in Nob Hill in late 2265, Leonard McCoy complained to his companion, James T.
