Captain (infantry)

Captain is an infantry rank in a number of current and historical organizations. In organizations that use infantry ranks, a Captain is ranked between a First Lieutenant and a Major. This infantry rank is not equal to the naval rank of Captain, rather it is equivalent to the naval rank of Lieutenant.

The infantry rank of Captain was used in three branches of the United States of America's Armed Forces - specifically the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. It was later used by United Earth's Military Assault Command Operations, and the Bajoran Militia.

In his first encounters with the crew of the USS Enterprise in 2364, one of the guises adopted by Q was that of a 20th century Captain in the United States Marines Corps. (TNG episode: "Encounter at Farpoint"; TNG comic: "Q Factor")
