Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound composed of one atom of carbon and two of oxygen. Most animals native to Class M planets inhale oxygen which via respiration they then exhale as carbon dioxide which in turn is inhaled by plants and output again as oxygen.

Carbon dioxide gas can commonly be found in the atmospheres of Class G, Class K, Class L and Class N planets. (ST reference: Star Charts)
