The Cardassian Guard was the military of the Cardassian Union until the late 24th century. It was divided into at least twelve Orders and several militias and was overseen by the Cardassian Central Command. (TNG episode: "Ensign Ro", DS9 episode: "Emissary", ST - Typhon Pact novels: Plagues of Night, Raise the Dawn, ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust)

The Guard was reorganized into the Cardassian Defense Force beginning in 2387. (STO website : The Path to 2409)

Background[]

"Those who fail the Union aren't demoted - they are eliminated." - Olij Merant

The Cardassian Guard was the Cardassian Union's primary space force under the regime of the Central Command.(VOY episode: "Nothing Human") It was organized into orders, with two of them deployed near Bajoran space (which were the Fourth and Seventh. (DS9 episode: "Emissary")

In 2367, the Cardassian Guard possessed transporters technology which used active feed pattern buffers, that was inferior to the transporters of the Federation. As of 2369, the Guard used replicator technology that was likewise inferior to that of the Federation. Cardassian starships were equipped with high-energy subspace field systems that were used to jam the sensors of an enemy starship. (TNG episode: "The Wounded"; DS9 episode: "Emissary")

Commanding the Cardassian Guard was the Gul-tar, who was also the head of the Central Command. (DS9 novel: Objective: Bajor)

The equivalent of flag officers in the Guard were the Grand gul, the Legate, and the Jagul (the equivalent of a commodore or rear admiral). (DS9 comic: "Turn of the Tide"); (DS9 episode: "Second Skin"); (TLE - Terok Nor novel: Day of the Vipers);(TLE - Terok Nor novel: Day of the Vipers); (ST novella: The Slow Knife)
