Carter Winston was a famed human trader and philanthropist in the 23rd century. Winston earned several fortunes during his career, and repeatedly used his wealth to assist Federation colonies in times of need. (TAS episode: "The Survivor")
In the early 23rd century, Winston assisted in brokering of a deal between the Federation and the Klingon Empire for advanced warp technology. (TOS novel: The Final Reflection)
In 2259, when a crop failure on Cerberus threatened the colony there, Winston donated his own funds to see the colonists through the crisis. Among those colonists was Joanna McCoy, daughter of Leonard McCoy.
Sometime before 2264, Winston became engaged to Starfleet officer Anne Nored. That same year, Winston went missing when his one-man ship was caught in a meteor storm and crashed on the planet Vendor. He died in 2265, after a year under the care of the Vendorians.
In 2269, a Vendorian shapeshifter posing as Winston boarded the USS Enterprise, acting as a Romulan spy. (TAS episode: "The Survivor")
[edit] Alternate universes
In one alternate timeline, Winston was elected Prime Minister of United Earth in 2264, and petitioned for membership in the Interstellar Coalition. (Star Trek: Myriad Universes novel: A Less Perfect Union)
