Centurion was a military rank which was common in many cultures across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The rank is approximately equal to a Starfleet lieutenant commander. (TNG episode: "The Enemy")

The Romulan Star Empire used the rank of centurion. In the mid-23rd century, an elderly centurion named T'Auethn served as an advisor to Commander Keras on several campaigns, including his last fateful mission to attack several Earth outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2266. (TOS episode: "Balance of Terror", CCG: These Are the Voyages)

While infiltrating a Romulan D7-class battle cruiser to obtain a cloaking device, James T. Kirk was disguised as a Romulan centurion. (TOS episode: "The Enterprise Incident")

Commander T'Shara, a leader of the Celesian campaign and wife of Praetor Hiren, was killed by one her centurions in 2379, when he mistook her for the enemy. (TNG movie novelization: Nemesis)
