Ensign Charles was a regular conn officer serving aboard the USS Enterprise-E, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, in late 2373.

Charles was bridge duty when the Enterprise engaged two Cardassian Galor-class warships in late 2373. During the assault, Charles console exploded and caused a wound on his forearm, thankfully Dr. Beverly Crusher was on the bridge, and was quickly able to tend his wounds and make him comfortable. A short time later, Charles was taken to sickbay for proper treatment. (TNG - The Dominion War novel: Behind Enemy Lines)
