For other uses, see Class M.

The Class M (or Minshara-class) planet is the most stable type for humanoid habitation. Class M planets may feature large areas of water, if water or ice covers more than 80% of surface then the planet is considered to be in the Class O or Class P subcategories. (ST reference: Star Charts, ENT episode: "Strange New World")

The TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky indicated that the term "Class M" was used by humans prior to first contact with Vulcans, or indeed before humanity reached any extra-solar planets.
