A coherent tetryon beam was a type of scanning beam that was used by the Caretaker to scan the USS Voyager and the Maquis vessel Val Jean when they entered the Badlands region of the Alpha Quadrant. The Caretaker was scanning for any lifeforms like himself which could take over the role of "caretaker" for the Ocampa. Any possible candidates were then transported to the Caretaker's array in the Delta Quadrant via a massive displacement wave. (VOY episode: "Caretaker")
