A communications officer is a title given to a crewmember aboard a starship, and are charged with monitoring and managing incoming communications to a starship, and respond if necessary. (Star Trek: The Original Series)

The role was more common aboard Federation starships in the 23rd century, as in the late 24th century, the role of communications officer was conducted by the tactical officer. (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
