The computer core was the location of the main computer on a Federation starship or space station.

A core was capable of handling required ship and station functions, with a second core capable of managing at least 85% of the operations in the event of a single core failure. (DS9 reference: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

Information storage technology advanced so quickly that a mid-23rd century tricorder had the memory storage capability of a 22nd century starship's computer core. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Core Rulebook)

Computer core Enterprise

The computer core of the USS Enterprise in 2270.

In 2270, Spock and Janice Rand used a maintenance corridor to climb into the computer core of the USS Enterprise. (TOS - New Visions comic: "Isolation")

Before the Enterprise refit, the vessel's core was located within the primary hull on decks 7 and 8. During the refit, an M-6 computer was installed within a central core shaft eight feet in diameter that was physically connected to the base of the helm station on the bridge and the ceiling of the sensor array at the bottom of the hull. The USS Excelsior had two computer cores, one in each hull, so that each section could operate independently in case of a saucer separation. (ST reference: Shipyards: Starfleet Ships 2151 - 2293)

Computer cores were also located on both the saucer section and engineering hull of Nebula-class starships. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook)

The USS Enterprise-D had three redundant main processing cores, two in the saucer section and one in the engineering section. The two cores within the saucer ran parallel as redundant backups. A subspace field generator created a non-propulsive field distortion that accelerated the processing speed of the main computer to 4,600 kiloquads/sec. Each of 2,048 modules had a storage capacity of about 630,000 kiloquads. The main bridge and battle bridge had seven dedicated and 12 shared sub-processors linked to the core by way of an optical data network and could serve as a backup in case of main core failure. Both sections of the computer core of Deepspace Research Facility 39 were located in the southeast portion of central level 2. (FASA RPG module: The Vanished)

Computer cores 1-8 of Starbase 364 were located about halfway down the structure. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Beta Quadrant Sourcebook)

Terok Nor was constructed with three main processing cores found between levels 14 and 21 within the mid-core assembly. They were multiply shielded from external electromagnetic interference and physical shock. The cores were 45.11meters tall and 15.54 meters in diameter, each being effectively two synchronized half-cores. When the station became Deep Space 9, Starfleet added a coprocessor and peripherals group system to the core to translate Cardassian code, and this system was replaced during Operation Return.
