Covaleski was a first-year cadet at Starfleet Academy in 2251. Over a meal in the Academy cafeteria, he told Gary Mitchell about the incident between James T. Kirk and Benjamin Finney aboard the USS Republic, that led Mitchell to seek Kirk out as a friend. (TOS novel: Republic)
