Lieutenant Daniel Reed was a male Starfleet officer who served as a security officer aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2250s as one of the four assistant security chiefs that reported to Security Chief Orloff. He was a Human-Vulcan genetic hybrid, being one-eighth Vulcan from his maternal great-grandmother. His Vulcan ancestor's family had been disgraced many years earlier when her clan had been held responsible for the loss of the Vulcan's Glory emerald, inspiring her to instill a great hatred of the object's current or future keepers in her offspring.

When the Enterprise journeyed to Areta, Reed was among the personnel Lieutenant Commander Orloff consulted with trying to find options for dissuading Captain Christopher Pike from beaming down alone and unarmed. When the Enterprise discovered the lost gem on Areta, Reed was determined to recover it for his own family in retribution for the years of disgrace. Reed was willing to go to great lengths to recover the emerald, including murdering two of his shipmates, T'Pris and Meadows, before being caught by Spock. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Glory)
