Dessica II is a planet, the second planet in the Dessica star system in the Beta Quadrant, near the borders of the space of the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire. (TNG episode: "Gambit")

History

Dessica II was discovered and settled by Romulans in the year 1650. Their colonists found the terrain difficult and natural resources to be scarce. A further problem developed when contact was made with the aggressive Wawu civilization, a native humanoid species with a pre-industrial culture. By the beginning of the 18th century, the Romulans had abandoned their settlement.

Following the Earth-Romulan War's conclusion at the Treaty of Algeron, Dessica II was placed on the Federation side of the Romulan Neutral Zone, although the Federation never made any attempt to settle the world or chart its system. Over the years, a number of enclaves of outcasts from both the Romulan Empire and the Federation remained living on the world, clustered around spaceports placed there by Orion and Yridian interests.

The Orion Syndicate and the Yridians had a great deal of influence over Dessica II, but didn't control the planet, being divided into several rival and conflictings factions. Many inhabitants were affiliated in one way or another to either of these groups, while each had many fully-fledged operatives. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)
