For the mirror universe counterpart, see Valtane (mirror).

Dmitri Valtane was a Human Starfleet officer who served as a science officer during the 23rd century. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; VOY episode & novelization: Flashback)

Valtane's first name was only given in VOY episode: "Flashback", with the previously released novel, TOS novel: The Fearful Summons, giving his name as Masoud Valtane.

Early Life and Career[]

Valtane, the son of Nikolai and Larisa Valtane was born on the Beta Niobe colony in 2259, and entered Starfleet Academy in 2277 at the age of 18.

In 2280, Cadet Valtane earned a citation for conspicuous bravery, when he saved two wounded crewman from a pack of Denebian slime devils, armed with only a stick, while serving aboard the USS Madrid in a cadet training cruise.

Following his graduation from the Academy in 2281, Valtane was assigned to the USS Gallipoli as a junior astrophysicist. During his team aboard the Gallipoli, he helped chart Sectors 219 Alpha, 220 Alpha, and 220 Beta.

In 2284, Valtane was promoted to full lieutenant and was assigned to the USS Lamneth as chief stellar cartographer, on a five-year mission of exploration in the Gurava Sector. Following the Lamneth's return in 2289, Valtane transferred to the USS Churchill as science officer. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

Aboard the Excelsior[]

The publishing of his paper, "Methods for Stabilizing Protomatter in High-Energy Matrices" by the Federation Institute of Science in 2291, led to Valtane's transfer aboard the USS Excelsior as science officer on the Excelsior's three-year mission to chart gaseous anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

By 2293, Valtane had been promoted to lieutenant commander and continued to serve as chief science officer aboard the Excelsior. Even though Valtane was a senior officer, he continued to bunk in normal crew quarters, with Ensign Tuvok being his bunkmate.

Following Captain Hikaru Sulu's attempt to cross into Klingon space and rescue Captain James T. Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy from the Klingons, the Excelsior came under heavy fire from Klingon warships. According to Tuvok's virus-affected memory of the events, Valtane was killed in the battle when a console exploded. However, in reality, Valtane survived the attack and was later seen on duty when the Excelsior joined the Enterprise-A in orbit of Khitomer. (VOY episode & novelization: Flashback; TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Valtane later transferred off of the Excelsior. (TOS novel: The Fearful Summons)
