Russian was a human language spoken by humans in the nation-state of Russia and in some areas that were part of the former Soviet Union on Earth. Russian was Slavic in origin.

The Melkot buoy warned the Enterprise not to enter their star system, in 2268. Spock deduced its warning was telepathic in origin-rather than from subspace. Ensign Pavel Chekov said every word was in his native tongue; along with the rest of the bridge crew, fluent outside of English. (TOS episode: "Spectre of the Gun")

When Sybok entered into a mind meld with Pavel Chekov, Chekov would later come to believe that Sybok spoke to him in Russian during the mind meld. (Novelization of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)
