The loss of the Kobayashi Maru formed the basis of a Starfleet Academy test simulation for Starfleet Command School cadets, known as "The Kobayashi Maru Scenario". A test of how an individual handles a no-win situation, has the cadet in command of a Starfleet vessel, charged with responding to a distress call from a crippled Kobayashi Maru, which is then threatened by hostile forces. In the novel, the ship is presented as an old, Klingon vessel which is now under the control of the Earth Cargo Authority and crewed by humans, including Captain Kojiro Vance. Its 300 passengers, mentioned in TOS movie: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, are revealed to be Vulcans who are tasked with establishing a secret listening outpost; the Kobayashi Maru is subsequently destroyed by attack vessels, also of Klingon design but under the remote control of the Romulans.
