Ecocid

Ecocids are a species native to the planet Eco in the Gamma Quadrant. The Ecocids are made up of many insect-like creatures. Individually, the Ecocids are not sentient, but by sharing information like a natural computer they form a hive mind. The individual Ecocids are sexless and comprised of soldiers, drones, nursemaids, and a queen. They emit small amounts of electricity acting like processors that form a computer. In the entrance to the Ecocids' inner hive, there are metal slivers in the walls that act as a contact to the hive mind's interface.

In 2370, when the Phoenix was hijacked, it was taken to Eco. While Benjamin Sisko and Jadzia Dax attempted to regain the tanker using subterfuge, the Ecocids tried to blackmail them. It threatened to expose them if it did not get a piece of the action. Odo was soon sent to kidnap the Ecocid queen. Dax promised to return the queen if the Ecocids promised to stay out of their affairs; they agreed. However, the Ecocids did not live up to their deal as they tried to dispatch Dax using false information and later exposed her. Even so, the queen was returned when Sisko, Odo, and Dax left Eco.
