In 2266, Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu piloted the Drake to and from the surface of Tlaoli IV to transport a large landing party and their equipment back to the Enterprise. Due to the subspace static which permeated the planet's atmosphere, Sulu had some problems controlling the shuttle, and on his first visit the Drake nearly plunged into a saltwater swamp. (TOS - The Janus Gate novel: Present Tense)
During one trip to the planet's surface, the Drake became caught in an atmospheric disturbance and was transported across time and space to an alternate 2296 at the same time that Sulu's counterpart from this timeline was transported to Tlaoli IV. After coming under fire from Gorn fighters, Sulu was able to safely crash-land the Drake on the surface of the Gorn planet. (TOS - The Janus Gate novel: Future Imperfect)
