Planet-sized egg hatching.

An egg is the ovum of some forms of animal life, created by the female for reproduction.

History and specifics[]

Many birds and reptiles, as well as some amphibians reproduce by laying eggs externally. These eggs are eaten as food on many planets throughout the known galaxy. On Earth, the eggs of a chicken are considered to be common breakfast fare. Including those of a fish. Also called "caviar", Deanna Troi developed a craving for this. As she herself de-evolved into an amphibian lifeform, native to pre-historic Betazed. (TNG episode: "Genesis") Jean-Luc Picard, in an alternate timeline future, compared the causality of the situation to the riddle of the "chicken and the egg", wondering whether the egg caused the chicken to come into existence, or if the chicken originated the egg. Because of the cyclical nature of both situations, where the end result leads back to the beginning cause. (TNG episode: "All Good Things...") Picard also kept a case stock of fish eggs from Earth for special occasions. As he felt replicators could not quite process and synthesize their quality. (TNG episodes: "Sins of the Father", "Deja Q")

Some sentient species also reproduce by laying eggs, while many intelligent and non-intelligent mammals internally utilize an egg as part of reproduction.

In 2267, hundreds of Jeru eggs were laid and started to hatch within a damaged mine on Angrena. (TOS - Star Trek: The Manga - Uchu comic: "Art of War")

In 2274, the planet Argus IV broke apart, revealing itself to have been an egg for a giant cosmozoan creature. (TOS comic: "It's a Living")

When Nog was offered an omelet by Vic Fontaine in 2376 . He declined upon recalling Earth omelets were typically made with bird's eggs and flavored mold, a thought which disgusted him. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book Two) However, former crewmember, Miles O'Brien was a fan of the traditional bacon and eggs breakfast. (TNG episode: "The Wounded"; DS9 episode: "The Assignment")
