Elaine Mello was a Human female, described as being a short woman with a round face and curly brown hair, who served in Starfleet in the 24th century.

In 2365, Mello was promoted to the rank of captain and shortly afterwards attended a classified briefing on the Bluegill parasites. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Lesser Evil)

By 2376, Mello was commanding officer of the USS Gryphon. In August of that year, Mello was attacked and killed by her first officer, Alejandro Montenegro, who had been infected by a Bluegill parasite. Shortly before her death, however, she appointed Colonel Kira Nerys as acting commanding officer of the Gryphon.
