Elaine Mello was a Human female, described as being a short woman with a round face and curly brown hair, who served in Starfleet in the 24th century.

By the mid-2370s, Mello held the rank of captain and served as commanding officer of the USS Gryphon. In late 2376, Mello was attacked and killed by her first officer, Alejandro Montenegro, who had been infected by a neural parasite. Shortly before her death, however, she appointed Colonel Kira Nerys as acting commanding officer of the Gryphon. (DS9 novels: Cathedral, Lesser Evil)
