The Elasians were a humanoid species native to the planet Elas in the Tellun system, in Federation space, in the Alpha Quadrant. (TOS episode: "Elaan of Troyius", Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Biology[]

Elasians were humanoid, and generally possessed square-shouldered builds and tan skin complexions. They have almond-shaped eyes and high cheekbones. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Female Elasians were famous for their beauty. They could also produce tears that contained a psychotropic biochemical that could be absorbed through the skin. Whoever touched these tears of an Elasian woman would become infatuated with her. (TOS episode: "Elaan of Troyius", Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Elasian men were said to have tried for centuries to eliminate the effect, without success. Doctor Leonard McCoy described it as an infection, and was eventually able to develop an antidote. (TOS episode: "Elaan of Troyius")

The Vulcans were known to have had performed scientific studies on the species due to their unusual reproductive practices. (TOS novel: Firestorm)

Culture[]

Elasian culture was noted as being socially primitive, but relatively technologically advanced (though not as much as their neighbors, the Troyians, who were fairly similar. (FASA RPG - The Orions module: Book of Common Knowledge)

Elasian women are treated as inferior members of the species unless they can prove their worth in a series of combat trials. Elasian Dohlmen must past these trials in order to be accepted as leaders. The bulk of Elasian men are warriors (always in uniform) and during the late 23rd century they were armed with weapons similar to the nuclear disintegrators of Terra V used in the 21st century. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 1")

In the Elasian view, showing weakness was the worst thing that one could do, especially showing weakness to a non-Elasian. Thus, they tended to be aggressive and arrogant, acting superior and disdainful to others. This was particularly true for members of the Elasian nobility. In any disagreement, they would not admit defeat or give up either easily or gracefully. These attitudes made it difficult for aliens to get along with Elasians, and especially so in negotiations. Federation anthropologists found this to be the natural result of the Elasian warrior culture.

Warrior virtues were widespread throughout Elasian society, and had done so for a long time, and they had a generally militaristic society. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds) On Elas, it was common to go armed in public, as part of local custom and dress. Elasians were skilled in the use of their weapons. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)

Elas was ruled by a monarchy, with a tribal society and semi-feudal political structure. Each Elasian first owed allegiance to a local chieftain, who could demand service from any follower who was old enough for military service. These local warlords served a regional overlord, who in turn served the Dohlman, a world-wide leader, though some important local lords could serve the Dohlman directly. A Dohlman was elected by the regional and most important local lords, choosing a new leader from their own ranks, and they ruled for life. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

The Council of Nobles, also called the Council of Lords, was an important body of these lords. (TOS episode: "Elaan of Troyius"; FASA RPG - The Orions module: Book of Common Knowledge)

The Elasian Warrantors of Peace preferred to remain among themselves in T'lingShar rather than get to know other species. (TOS novel: Dwellers in the Crucible)

History[]

Mirror universe[]

In 2268, in a effort to bring peace between Elasians and Troyians, Elaan was arranged to marry Hakil, the Caliph of Troyius. The Terran Empire assigned the ISS Enterprise to transport Elaan to Troyius in order to prevent the Klingon Empire from conquering their worlds and gaining access to their rich supplies of dilithium crystals.

As a proud Elasian warrior, Elaan was revolted by the prospect of marriage to a Troyian. Kryton, the leader of the Dohlman's guards, also hated the arrangement, as he loved Elaan and wished to marry her. Consequently, he conspired with the Klingons to sabotage the mission. Infuriated and insulted, Elaan raged about her circumstances and injured Petri by stabbing him in the back. The assault imperiled the success of the mission, after Petri refused to deal with Elaan any further. The only person to whom the Dohlman would consent to receive further instruction in etiquette was the highest-ranking individual on the ship: Captain Spock.

Shortly thereafter, Spock confided in Elaan that the Terran Empire's engineers had lied when they told the Elasians that their planet contained nothing of value decades earlier. As both Elas and Troyius were extremely well fortified, Starfleet Command reasoned that it would prove significantly less costly to provoke a prolonged war of attrition between the two planets so that they would be severely weakened and would therefore offer little resistance to the planned invasion. Furthermore, Spock told her that his orders were to halt the conflict by force of arms and subdue their planets in preparation for an occupying force. He instead suggested to the Dohlman that she wed Hakil as this would mean that their planets' defenses would be intact and united in the event of a Klingon attempt to annex Elas and Troyius. Elaan agreed to Spock's plan and granted Elas' exclusive mining rights to Spock personally rather than the Terran Empire, the control of which facilitated his rise to the Admiralty. Following Elaan and Hakil's marriage, a peace treaty was signed between Elas and Troyius, scuppering the plans of both the Terran and Klingon Empires. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)

After the collapse of the Terran Empire, the Elasians of the mirror universe were members of the Alliance. In 2369, Regent Worf destroyed several Elasian ships after the Dohlman refused to allow her ships to act as an honor guard. Kira Nerys suggested to Worf that trade routes be diverted to Lissepian space and away from Elasian space. (ST novel: Dark Passions, Book Two)

First splinter timeline[]

During the Borg invasion of 2381, an Elasian convoy of ships was destroyed by the Borg. Many Elasians were killed, mainly children. (VOY novel: The Eternal Tide)
