The moon originally possessed a thin but breathable atmosphere and enough liquid water to support basic plant life. By 2379, it was home to severaly scientific research laboratories, focussed mostly on studying the moon itself. Lenkit Casten was working at one such lab as an ecologist.
In that year, members of the Ohalavaru sect, a Bajoran extremist group, intended to strip-mine the planetoid to uncover proof of their beliefs that the Prophets are not gods, but merely "teachers". To that end, they brought massive amounts of explosives to the moon's surface. Although they were foiled in their ultimate goal by the Federation Starfleet and Bajoran authorities, a large explosion did occur, which cost multiple lives and turned an area of Endalla's surface into black glass. (DS9 novel: Sacraments of Fire)
In 2380, Endalla was the location of an event that Benjamin Sisko described as a "calamity" that cost thousands of lives and transformed the entire surface of the moon into a wasteland and ripped away its atmosphere, a subspace wave destroying the research labs. Aside from Sisko, Elias Vaughn was also involved in events that transpired on Endalla. (DS9 novel: Sacraments of Fire, ST - Typhon Pact novel: Rough Beasts of Empire, ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust)
