The USS Enterprise (XCV-330), also classified as the SS Enterprise was the first spacecraft named Enterprise to be designated a starship. (ST reference work: The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Star Trek Encyclopedia)
[edit] History
The Enterprise was originally built as a simple fusion probe on Earth in the early 21st century. It was one of the earliest vessels to leave the Sol system in the pre-warp era. (ST reference work: Star Trek Maps)
The Enterprise became an enduring part of mankind's early space voyages, enough so that its image was seen alongside the Phoenix at the 602 Club in the 2140s. (ENT episode: "First Flight"; "Home")
In 2175, the vessel was refit and brought back into service as an historical passenger liner within the Federation. For 47 years, the Enterprise offered large-scale transport between the major planets of the Federation. (ST reference work: Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology)
Fifty years after its retirement, the Enterprise was still not as well-known as its sister ships. In 2273, an image of the Enterprise was erroneously believed to be an early, unused Vulcan-based prototype. Its image was briefly placed in the recreation room of the Constitution-class Enterprise before being taken down and replaced with one of the more famous Enterprise (NX-01). (TOS movie: Star Trek: The Motion Picture; TOS novel: Ex Machina)
[edit] Background
The ship was originally designed by Matt Jefferies during the early pre-production stage of Star Trek. After the show was cancelled, the design was considered for use in a planned, but never produced, sci-fi television series by Gene Roddenberry. It was then featured in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
It is uncertain what the USS prefix in the ship’s name (which appears in the portrait seen in TMP) stands for. The USS Enterprise predates the Federation, and was not (originally) a Starfleet ship (The NX-01 was Starfleet’s first Enterprise). While the United Earth Space Probe Agency did exist before 2143, they are not known to have used a prefix before their ship names. The United States of America did still exist in 2143 and they are the current users of the USS prefix (United States Ship), although this does not conclusively make the XCV-330 American. The Star Trek Encyclopedia gives this Enterprise a "SS" prefix.
