Equipoise was a famed racehorse in the 20th century.

In 2296, while being held by Romulan soldiers on planet Obsidian, Leonard McCoy spoke at length about the sport of horse racing in order to forestall his execution. In mentioning Equipoise in his listing of great horses, McCoy inadvertantly quoted a song lyric from the musical Guys and Dolls. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)
