Ernest Rutherford (August 30, 1871 – October 19, 1937) was a human chemist and nuclear physicist. Rutherford was born in Brightwater, New Zealand. He developed the standard model of the atom as a nucleus orbited by electrons and pioneered the splitting of the atom. Rutherford received the 1908 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He died in Cambridge, England, of complications from an umbilical hernia.
